Gua Sha is a very simple and effective traditional healing technique. During a gua sha treatment, massage oil is applied to the surface of the skin and a round-edged instrument is used to stroke the skin. Sufficient pressure is applied so that the subcutaneous fascia is reached. After a gua sha treatment, the skin can be marked with petechiae(the medical name for the markings of the stagnant blood and metabolic waste) that can come to the surface of the skin. The petechiae normally fades after 3 days. The more stagnation and stiffness in the muscles, the more petechiae is brought to the surface. Most people say it feels like a deep massage.
The effect of gua sha treatment is to reduce blockages and to facilitate improved circulation. The result of removing these blockages is that the fluid and blood circulation is vastly improved in the area and any tension in the muscles is reduced. Many admit they do not mind the markings because they feel such great relief immediately following treatment.
