Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on medical theory developed within the Chinese philosophy of Daoism thousands of years ago. It is the study of natural phenomena. It examines the essential nature of a subject and describes it in non-material ways. Human beings are a part of nature and the same principles are applied to healing. Acupuncture simply affects our health by acting on an aspect undetectable by modern science- our Energetic System.
This organizational model may help you understand the diagnostic process:
Energy: Acupuncture is energetic medicine. Energy circulates throughout our bodies through channels or meridians and can be manipulated.
Yin/Yang: Simply put, yin and yang describes how everything in nature is interrelated. They describe the form and function of our organs. Yin is the form- the physical organs that can be observed with an MRI or surgery. Yang is the function the organ performs, like the digestion of food by your stomach. Yin and yang are diagnostic tools used in TCM.
The 5 Elements or Phases: There are five aspects of nature- Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water that relate to the five organ systems in the human body. Each organ system is comprised of a wide spectrum of attributes that evaluate the current state of the patient and help form the basis of diagnosis. For example- the Wood Phase correlates with the season of Spring, or the time of birth in nature, the liver/gallbladder organs of our body, the color green and the emotion of anger.
Energy Channels or Meridians: The primary channels are each connected to an organ. Acupuncture points are located on these channels and are chosen for the unique effect they have on that organ system and their relationship to the entire body.
Below is a list of conditions supported by research for which Chinese Medicine may be helpful:
Initial treatment –
Now it should be clear that the underlying principles of TCM are very different from traditional Western notions about health, illness and the workings of the body. Chinese medical diagnosis and treatment involves identifying the factors that are out of balance and attempting to bring them back into harmony. Diagnosis is carried out by means of listening to the patient, asking a series of questions, observing the tongue and palpating various parts of the body.
The initial intake takes about one and a half hours. During this time you will also have the chance to ask questions, receive treatment and a diagnosis and treatment plan can be discussed.
Chinese medicine has the added benefit of carrying few or no side effects. It treats the actual cause of illness rather than suppressing symptoms.
